When the Hare Krishna maha-mantra is heard in a room, it may be sung with instruments or spoken quietly by one person. A newcomer can begin by listening carefully to the words before worrying about how they sound to anyone else.

The maha-mantra

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Gaudiya Vaishnavas chant these names as a devotional address. Approach the mantra with that personal intention rather than treating the words merely as background sound. You can hear the pronunciation from a reliable teacher or an established devotional recording.

Japa and kirtana

Japa generally refers to individual repetition of the mantra, commonly with beads. Kirtana is congregational chanting, often in a call-and-response form. If you are joining a gathering for the first time, ask the host how to participate and allow yourself time to listen.

Begin with an attentive interval you can maintain. Formal commitments should be understood with qualified guidance rather than inferred from a short introductory article. There is no need to imitate someone else’s external pace.

Attend to the attitude as well as the sound

Caitanya-caritamrita, Antya 20.21, connects chanting with humility, tolerance, and respect for others. Consider how those qualities might enter an ordinary conversation after your sitting. A devotional practice has a relationship with the rest of the day.

When attention wanders, notice it and return to hearing the names. Avoid turning the sitting into a running judgment about your worth. Seek help when you need instruction; a beginner is allowed to be a beginner.
